Reality and the Picker Sisters

..............................................................~THEIR WORLD~...........................................

............................................................... ~MY WORLD~...............................................

Watching this show is a love-hate thing!

First Impression? Too staged

It's a hard show to watch by those of us covered with dust and spiderwebs down in the pickin' trenches. Tanya and Tracy seem sweet and relatively innocuous, and they look good in front of the cameras....but pickers? Not believable! I hate that they get to have an army of people behind them doing the down and dirty work it takes to produce a worthy pick. (In reality, only about 1 in 10 picks will yield significant bounty) Alan is talented, and also looks good in front of the cameras, but you gotta know there is a bunch of guys out back of that way-cool warehouse putting all this stuff together!

Last Impression? Can't wait for the next episode

I totally love the type of stuff the girls are buying, and the end results they come up with for utilizing their fabulous finds! It inspires me and validates my rust addiction! And it's a refreshing break from Mike and Frank's sign-age and gear-age picks.

Bottom Line? Yeah, it's a Reality Show. But it's not Reality!

I could probably skip the first 55 minutes.....but wild horses wouldn't keep me from seeing the totally cool end results in the last 5 minutes!

Sassy, I so agree with you. I'm really disappointed in this offering. I was hoping for a pair of gals that we could relate to. I don't relate to these two on any level. Staged is exactly what this is so it's not reality to me. Auction Hunters with Alan and Ton are a joy to watch. They are genuine. Even American Pickers has that let's go junkin feel and the camera is on the gold they score. I won't be watching again. I would rather visit your blog and other creative bloggers to see what they do. Sea Witch

TOTALLY AGREE! I was pumped to check it out and then bummed when I started watching it. The guys from American Pickers are normal run of the mill looking guys, why is it these women have to look like models? AND no way you can look that good while you're tramping around junk looking for goodies. I was disappointed, but like you I just really want to see what they create at the very end of the show!!

Just watched my first show of Picker Sisters and I wasn't that impressed. You are right about seeing the end result but there is something about the girls I just can't get around...Love Frank and Mike's personalities...they make their show but I am not that interested in bike and motorcycle and oil can finds. But, I do keep on watching. My husband likes them! I will give the Picker Sisters another chance. Maybe they will grow on me.~Hugs, Patti

That's exactly what I thought! It was" how many cute and sassy things can I say in 30 minutes. I think I'll dvr and watch the last few minutes too. Digging the crap out is half the fun, fixing it is the other half.

Dang it...I missed the show. Thanks for the feedback. I'm afraid I'll be of the same opinion.

Am soooo glad I don't have cable TV anymore, just can't deal with the so called reality TV...and don't you know it's all staged, I know the pickers and it has NEVER been that way with them, the producers pick all the stops and TOTALLY stage everything, but America falls for it every time, as they live in mansions and reap the rewards of stardom and of their HUGE paychecks...we know the reality of it huh girl...espadrilles n skirts...I'm already offended...but that's Hollywood baby!!!

Have a good one junkin sista!!!

I have two words to say about that show..... "GET REAL!"

Love your honesty here because I was thinking the same thing. I was also thinking they've paid way too much for some of their Texas finds. I could take them to some really cool places and they'd find some things at a better price. I'm looking forward to the next episode as well.

They are clever and easy on the eyes, but their ideas are fantastic. Do I think it's a bit contrived? You betcha. Who finds a construction crew on a farm to market road who'll stop what they're doing to make a measly $200
to tear down a house? Really?
And come on...would you shell out $400+ for that barnwood furniture?
Plus...if I'm gonna travel from Cali to Texas...I'm gonna buy a whole lot more than they did. I'm just saying.
Will I watch it again? Yes she said sadly hanging her head in shame!

P.S. Now I've got to go and buy some city shorts and boots so I can get some stuff free!

I missed it! By the sound of it, I better catch it soon or it will be off the air before I get a chance.

I would love to see the ideas they showed . . .

I love this show but agree with you on the "not reality" part...but I also love the clothes they wear lol...I always think though, they go out with their camera crews looking all stylish, how are they not getting ripped off? And I can't believe that nice old guy gave them that sign, just gave it to them and then they had the nerve to lowball him on the table bottom he made!

Totally agree! The don't even get dirty. But I do like what is made from the picks.

I agree and will watch it if I come upon it again just to see what gets made....I worry about those shorts and all that rusty junk... I hope their tetnus shots are up to date... Not that they are doing any heavy lifting but just walking through the weeds. I wonder how much everyone gets paid just to be on film?

Hi Nancy...I agree with you. I'm hoping that the girls will "grow on me" the more I watch. The phone calls from the van & Alan's reaction were particularly irritating to me. But, I do love that we get to see what is made from their finds. And, girlfriend, they've got nothing on you, by the way!! Hope to see you soon!

Color me crazy, I kinda' loved it.

Is it real? Well, no. It's on television. But I liked their picks... I liked their rapport... and mostly it just looked like they were having fun. Are there people off camera helping? Sure. Do I care a ton? Not so much.

Really believe all of these shows — even the beloved American Pickers — are made pretty much the same way. This one made me smile. So I'm in.

Aw the editing of television. It's like the person that says on those infomercials that they got filthy rich. How many people didn't get rich, I'd like to know. So how much rust do you have to go thru till you find a 'find'. I know, I've done it! How do we know people haven't brought stuff to them to use on the show...hmmmmmm?

Hi Nancy, I can't believe I've never heard of the show ~ I'll have to give it a try but I'll probably be of the same opinion as you all. Funny, this past weekend I went to Mike and Frank's place in Iowa, it was a hoot to see their "store" there, Antique Anthropologie. They really are REAL! I just found your blog today and am so glad I did. I'm your newest follower! Stop by and visit some time!

I found the clips on the Lifetime site and watched them. It's definitely "reality" tv. Not much reality to it, but I did enjoy the show. I liked seeing what the girls were wearing each time. I want to get me some short brown boots for when the weather gets a little cooler.

I liked seeing their ideas. I don't have the clientele that would pay $400 for the old furniture . . .

Don't watch TV but love your take on it. There is nothing glamourous about this business unless it is staged! I did see the "American Pickers" because a friend tape it for me and I felt the same way about that. Sort of fun to watch, but reality, no way!

Yes! I agree totally. About the crew-My friend Trisha and I know we can't do it all, and when the going gets tough, we crew for each other. We have nieces and nephews, brothers and sons(she has sons) who can crew in a pinch. But we have the vision. I think asking for help is the key, and I'm just getting into it myself. I am tired of not getting anything done, cause I won't ask for help. (sorry for the rant)So the Picker Sisters do inspire, but yes! I need a crew too!

Spot on. I completely agree with you. I even posited that I'd like this show a lot better if it were a silent movie or slideshow. There's a hungry nation of junkers out there that would love a show that is REAL. No self-respecting picker goes out tarted up like that. It's plain impractical!

We absolutely couldn't stand the show. They paid way too much for everything and made dumb stuff. Won't be watching it again.

Can't wait for the next episode so I can dis it with my friends!! OMG!! are they are drugs or what with the prices they pay???

Ugh, what a disappointment. I am in LA area and you really do not need to go too far to get any number of the things they found. But even the gimmick of upcycling the item to a new use has a financial limit. Knowing all these shows are very staged, even American Pickers unfortunately, you couldn't justify the gas, vehicle use, accommodations and food that is spent on top of item purchase and then Alan the fabricator's cost. It isn't cost effective. But with a series contract, there you have the ability to spend lavishly. Not really in reality for a "reality" show. I could never stay that stunning through a pick either and definitely I am against using my sexuality to acquire items. Makes us pickers look like idiots. Barb

Just found your post, so I am a little late to chime in- but my friend and I are completely crazed about the Picker Sisters. It is like a train wreck that you can't stop watching but you know you should look away. We actually started a blog inspired by the show. We are junkers and love hearing from other junkers. Will be checking out more posts on Sassytrash:) http://pickergirlsgardenjunk.blogspot.com/

Yah...not that impressed with the finished products either. Let's take the Headboard bench for instance. The fabric on the cushions was a bad fit for the rustic look of the back. The door as seat was a bad choice in that frankly you can't get away from the feeling that it's a misplaced door. Just doesn't quite make it...and talk about uncomfortable!. Also thought that while the barbed wire light was a great idea, they didn't really come off that well. Can't put my finger on it, but it's just not working for me. Why am I qualified to judge? I hold a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and know both the antique and interior decorating business.
